Because of these substances Devil's claw acts anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antirheumatic. In in vitro studies found that the Devil's claw root, unlike other drugs do not inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandins. Pre-clinical studies with humans demonstrated that Devil's claw root acts as an antiinflammatory drug inhibiting lipoxygenase enzyme, an enzyme responsible for the biosynthesis of leukotrienes. The German Commission E Devil's claw root is recommended as help in the treatment of bone–muscular diseases. It is also recommended for the treatment of osteoarthritis because it reduces the need for analgesics and nonsteroidal anti–inflammatory therapy.
